Review: Hanna

THE SETUP: A child (Saoirse Ronan), raised in the European backwoods as an assassin by her father (Eric Bana), is tired of living in seclusion and wants to a real life. By “real life,” I mean going on a mission to kill a mysterious spy (Cate Blanchett). Much asskicking to come.

THE THOUGHTS: If you’ve never believed a 100lb girl could hold her own against guys twice her size…watch Hanna. If this and Atonement are any indication, Saoirse Ronan is going to have a pretty impressive career (I like to pretend Lovely Bones didn’t happen. Sorry Peter Jackson). Directed by Joe Wright, this action thriller is intense, intelligent, and engaging. You care about Ronan as she makes her way through the modern world even though we know she has killed, and will continue to kill, everyone that gets in the way of her mission. The supporting cast is great, as you’d expect from Bana and Blanchett (though her southern/Texan drawl can be a bit distracting), and theyreally keep the story going to the big confrontation at the end. Along the way there’s some pretty impressive action as Hanna tries to complete her mission, reunite with her father, meet up with a travelling hippy family and avoid assassins. Add an amazing soundtrack from the Chemical Brothers and the beautiful scenery of Europe and you’ll be pretty damn entertained.

HANNA Rating:
3 stars – good movie, take a friend. Finally we have a decent 2011 movie to get behind. Hanna delivers a bit of heart, some great action and a smart story.

Random Recommendations
Notes on a Scandal (2006) – Two actresses at the top of their game, Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett are two high school teachers sharing an odd friendship of jealousy and desire. Cate likes a 15-year-old. Judi likes Cate. It doesn’t go so well.

Hunt for Red October (1990) – I can’t believe this came out over 2 decades ago…well I can looking at Alec Baldwin in it. I loved this movie when it came out, I love it  now. If you can get past Sean Connery’s complete inability to do a Russian accent, you’ll be taken over by a pretty damn smart military thriller.
