Movie Review of Pacific Rim

movie review of pacific rim

I’ve been looking forward to this flick for a while. Guillermo del Toro does some amazing work when it comes to the fantastical: Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth…and here he was doing a summer blockbuster movie about robots fighting monsters. If anyone could create a believable world out of this 5-year old fantasy, it was del Toro. So here’s my movie review of Pacific Rim.

What Happened

Beating 30-storey monsters by throwing 30-storey robots at them seems like a great idea, especially when you’re winning. Until you find out they’ve just been playing with you. And your ruining all the waterfront property.

What’s Good

Why would you go to see a monsters versus robots movie? I just answered my own question. And this movie gets it right. Action and the special effects are spot on!

Director  brings his skill at creating distinct worlds to Pacific Rim. You really feel like the characters live there and it’s all happening, right around the planet.

British actor Idris Elba continues his tradition of making everything better, including bad dialogue and character development.

What’s Bad

Besides Idris, there’s not much to expect from the human side of this flick. The language and acting seem awkward or wooden, filled with stereotypes and clichéd characters. Especially the guy the whole movie was hung around: Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunam. We needed more humanity with our robots punching monsters.

Nagging feeling that this is what an adult Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would look like.

What’s the Decision?

3.5/5 stars. A movie that gives you exactly what it promises…but not much else.
